Gateway Active Award
Merton Mencap has set up a Gateway Active Centre in Merton. The Gateway Active Award programme is a project which supports people with a learning disability to improve their health and wellbeing, and to participate in leisure activities and challenges that they have not had an opportunity to do before. We have set up the Gateway Active Centre at two of our existing projects - our Saturday Club (for adults) and our Transition Club (for young people).
Gateway Active Award is a non competitive activity based award that is designed to be accessible to people with a learning disability of any age and ability. Each participant must complete activities in 5 different categories to achieve an award: these are Hobbies, Fitness, Volunteering, Lifestyle and Gateway Challenge. Participants must spend at least 20 hours on each of these categories and evidence time spent and activities undertaken in a portfolio. Portfolios are then assessed and, if complete, an award is given - the Gateway Active Award.
The activities are planned in accordance with participants' needs and goals and progress towards completion is submitted by a member of Merton Mencap staff. The final assessment and moderation is done by a member of Royal Mencap staff who will visit our Gateway Active centre to look at the portfolios. Certificates will be awarded at a National Ceremony during 2013.
